Henry W Metz was the SD State Representative from Faulk County (1940-51)

Francis M. "Pete" Metz

Francis M. "Pete" Metz was born in Miranda, South Dakota, on March 5, 1909, to Henry and Anna (Alexander) Metz. Francis was the youngest of four children. Francis grew up in Miranda, SD, where he attended grade school. Francis graduated from Faulkton High School in 1920, farmed with his father and brother, and was appointed rural mail carrier from June 1, 1940 to March of 1944. Francis married Betty Ford on June 8, 1940, and daughter Virginia Lee was born to this union on May 7, 1941. Francis M. Metz was inducted into the Army on March 28, 1944. Francis received his basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas. From there he was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland, and then overseas. On October 11, he was assigned to the 119th Infantry Regiment, Company B, with a rank of PFC.

Army Pfc. Francis M. Metz was killed on a December 21, 1944, in Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge. He was interred in a military cemetery in Belgium until 1947, when his body was returned to the United States and buried in Miranda, South Dakota.


Pfc. Metz was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously on February 3, 1945.

Henry & Anna first lived on a farm in LaFoon
Township for about 2 years. In1900, they moved
into this house in Miranda which was previously
owned by the Frank Byrne Family.  They raised
their family here.
